20 wks & Feeling Clueless

I’m half way there! Half way to a bouncing baby girl. Well, she’s already bouncing--she moves a lot--but I’m half way to meeting her, and I’m starting to feel those nerves. I don’t know much of anything about raising a baby. I’m the youngest child, growing up I only babysat older kids... in other words, I don’t know much about this baby bidnaz.

This is where I’m coming to you for help. I have a few questions on my mind that I’d love your insights on:

Diapers: What brand is a good brand? I’d like to start buying those now (a great suggestion made by a Facebook friend), but I don’t know where to start.

Cradles/Bassinets: Worth the investment? I imagine it’s nice to have that bitty babe close by while they’re newborns, which would require such a bed, right?

Clothes: Is the month thing on clothing accurate? In other words, I’m due in June. Does this mean I should be buying winter clothes in the 6-9 month size?

Birthing Classes (eeep!): Is that something I should start looking into now? I have to admit that ignorance is currently bliss, but I’m going to have to face the childbirth music sooner or later. Is it sooner? Or is it later?

Best Baby Sites and Stores: When it comes to baby furniture/bedding/etc., do you know of any good websites or stores? Babies R Us and Pottery Barn Kids are about the only big baby stores around here that I know of, though Buy Buy Baby is coming soon (yay!).

Any ideas you have to share about these or other topics would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, my baby-wise friends. This clueless mama-to-be greatly appreciates your wisdom.

My Studio 5 Storage Segment and a Free Download

Recently I had the pleasure of sharing a few crafty storage solutions on Studio 5, a local lifestyle program. As promised, I’m back with a link to that segment. Looks like a pink balloon and chocolates wrapped in shiny pink foil.

But what does the tag say?

Yes, indeed! It's a girl!

We couldn't be more excited. Bring on the pink! :)

A New Year's Greeting

Despite the best of intentions, I only got a portion of my Christmas cards out on time. No worries. That’s what New Year's greetings are for, right? I hope so, because that’s the route I took. I made these cards for some of those on my card list.

Unlike traditional cards, I used a small kraft sack as my card base (instead of paper).

I stamped the word “wishes” and the actual wishes tags using an alphabet set from Clear & Simple Stamps.

I then cut the sack down a little using pinking sheers.

Using a small circle punch, I punched a tab in the bag.

I stamped a few of the things I wish for my friends this year.

I stamped the date on an office tag, using a doily set from Studio Calico and a vintage numbers set from Cavallini & Co. *swoon*

I ADORE these bitty clips from Stampin’ Up! It added just the little detail I was looking for.

For a little texture, I sewed on the wish tags and stitched the tag to the paper sack.

To finish things off, I made envelopes using an envelope template and cardstock. Don’t you LOVE the decorative shipping label? They’re a favorite new item of mine. They’re from TapeSwell.

These 2012 greetings actually came together rather quickly. I had fun looking at cards in a different, less traditional way. I hope you like the idea and will do the same.

New Year, BIG News!

See that? It's our baby (taken at 14 weeks)! Isn't he/she cute? :)

Cory and I are beyond thrilled to announce that we’re expecting a baby! If you’ve followed my blog for a while, you know that we lost a baby in 2010, so we remain cautiously optimistic at this point, but we are getting more excited and less afraid as things progress. In fact, I bought my first little baby thing this week - a cute sweater outfit. Up until now, I've been too afraid to take that step, but I finally did, and it felt good. We deeply appreciate any warm thoughts you have to send our way during this scary/exciting time.

Whenever I share this happiness with someone, I get similar questions, so I thought I’d answer a few of those for you now.

* How far along are you? I’m currently 18 weeks. For those of you who don’t speak ‘pregnancy’ (I’m still learning the language myself), this is 4.5 months, or about half way. Everything is measured in weeks because that’s how quickly things change and progress. It’s pretty amazing! And scary!

* What are you having? We find out the gender on Wednesday, and yes, I’m definitely finding out. I admire those who can sit on such a surprise for a full nine months, but I’m absolutely not in that “team green” club.

* How are you feeling? Much better these days. The first trimester was rough, to say the least. I lost 18 pounds. Of course, I had weight to lose, so that was okay, but I felt pretty ick most of the time. I’m now able to eat and actually enjoy it again, and I have a bit more energy, which is great! I’m currently off of my narcolepsy medicine, which, combined with pregnancy fatigue, has taken its toll on my energy, but it hasn’t been as hard as I feared.

Due to some autoimmune fun on my part, I’m considered “high risk.” Because of this, I’m blessed with not one, but two fabulous doctors, and they take very good care of me. More than that, Cory has been PHENOMENAL. He’s always taken great care of me, but he’s gone above and beyond with nothing but a sweet and loving attitude (even when my own attitude isn’t always described in such a favorable way). I’m very loved and very grateful for that love!

Yeah... this is pretty much how I look in all of my fall/winter photos this year--sick but happy. This kind of sick is okay because of what it means, and I did my very best to keep a positive attitude for that reason, even on the worst days.

* Do you have names picked out? We’re still working on this one. We don’t really see eye to eye on most names, especially where a little boy is concerned. I like Eli. Cor’s ho-hum on that one. He likes Archie (he says he’s kidding, but I know part of him really does like it). And while that name is admittedly growing on me, I don’t see it making the final cut. So, the jury is currently out on this one.

* Is my family excited? Absolutely! My mom keeps referring to the babe as “Little Peggy” (her name), and my pop has started in with the “Little Gerald” (his name). LOL My sister-in-law asks me almost daily if I know the gender, because she can’t wait to start shopping for bitty shoes. Yes, the fam is definitely on board with this baby bidnaz.

* What about your car? As much as I ADORE my cute Ford Mustang, it’s not exactly a mom car. It looks like I’m going to have to find Sally a new home. If you know of anyone looking for a much loved 05 Mustang with low milage and an AWESOME stereo, please let me know. I want her going to a good home.

I love this car! This pic was taken at the Bonneville Salt Flats in April. Sally is now looking for a good home. Let me know if you have any leads. Thanks!

For those of you interested, I’ll do my best to keep my blog updated as thing progress. I’ll definitely share the gender news when we have it to share.

I’ll close with a sincere thank-you to you for your support throughout our baby journey, in 2010 and now. It warms our hearts.

DIY Craft Storage and a Giveaway!

Every year at this time I say to myself, “Let’s get this mess cleaned up. It’s time to get organized!” In an effort to make that happen, I’ve created a few projects to help store my always-growing crafting stash.

I’m going to share these ideas on Studio 5 this morning at 11:00. If you’re in the neighborhood (TV-reaching ‘hood, that is), I hope you’ll tune in. If not, I’ll post the segment tomorrow. Here’s what I’m going to share:

Washi Tape Tube

This idea, inspired by one I saw on Pinterest, is so clever. Simply fill a straw container with rolls of decorative tape. It looks pretty and keeps the tape all together. You may have to unscrew the nut at the end of the metal dish so you can thread your tape, but that’s an easy task and completely worth it!

Button Button

I found these M-A-Zing oversized buttons at Mood, a fabric store in NYC. And, guess what!?! You don’t have to fly to the Big Apple to score these. You can get them on their website!

Use them to hold your favorite decorative buttons. Buttons to hold more buttons? Love it!

Washi Tissue Hangers

I first saw washi tissue paper (or very thin, decorative tissue paper) at the Nat’l Stationery Show in May. And I fell in love. But how do I store it without it getting damaged and wrinkled? Trouser hangers!

Simply Mod Podge (glue) the tissue paper (mine is from 7gypsies) to the hanger for a quick hanging option that automatically identifies the tissue it’s to hold. These hangers are fun whether you use them in your craft room or your closet. Wouldn’t they be cute holding little baby clothes?

Lined with Liners

Another piece inspired by Pinterest, I filled an IKEA jar with my collection of cupcake liners. I then created a box flower from a few liners and placed it on top of the jar to give it a little pizzazz.

Paperclip Keepers

Decorative paperclips are a BIG deal right now. As you begin to add them to your stash, consider storing them on an old cheese grater like this one. I simply spray painted it a retro pink and clipped my clips on.

For this pin board (purchased at Hobby Lobby), I attached strips of canvas with pins and then clipped the paperclips on. Either storage option will work and look cute in your space!

Not Your Grandma’s Pin Cushion

Canvas Corp, one of my favorite crafting companies, just released these terrific burlap books, just right for keeping your collection of pins. No mess. No fuss. Just storage!

Quick Christmas Crafts: Wreaths and Ornaments

My talented Aunt Ruby made this wreath some 40 years ago. Mom hangs it every year. Handmade is so special!

You might say this is a Christmas miracle. After months of no blog bidnaz, I have a little something to share. Handmade holiday crafts! There’s still time to make someone special a decoration. Here are a few of the projects I’ve put together this year.

Last weekend the gals in my family got together to make wreaths, all inspired by the Dec. issue of Woman's Day magazine.

My sis-in-law and I both decided to go with paper straw wreaths. I bought the straws at Orson Gygi, a local kitchen supply company. You’ll also need a hot glue gun, ribbon, and a foam wreath form.

Here’s how it's done:

1. Cover the inside and outer edges of your foam wreath base with ribbon. You can either pin the ribbon in place or glue it.

2. Cut straws to two varying lengths and attach them to the wreath base, alternating between the longer and the shorter straw.

3. When the first layer of straws is done, take another style of straw, cut it to two smaller lengths, and layer them over the background group of straws. Top the finished wreak off with a bow!

5. Hang the wreath by attaching a loop of ribbon to the back of the wreath.

Gina, my sis-in-law, went with blue straws for a neat snowflake effect. Cool!

Mom opted for the box wreath, which is super cute. You’ll need several small boxes in various sizes (I got ours at Xpedx), wrapping paper, ribbon, hot glue, and a wire wreath form.

1. Position your boxes on your wreath how you want them to fit.

2. Wrap the boxes with wrapping paper and adhere them to the wreath frame.

3. Top some of the boxes off with ribbon and hang the wreath. Fun!

Inspired by an awesome tutorial at Jessica Jane Handmade, I also made some clay bird ornaments for my family. I love the way they turned out.

Happy World Card Making Day!

It’s time to create & celebrate. Today is World Card Making Day (WCMD)! I adore shaped cards, so I put together a few using a sheet of paper from Bella Blvd. to share with you in honor of this fun day.

I love the large shapes on this Sunny Happy Skies paper from Bella Blvd. They make quick and cute shaped cards.

It was as easy as cutting out the different elements from the paper (tree, house, and ice cream) and connecting them to cardstock backings, which I cut following the shape of the cards.

I think the house is my favorite. For me, it’s the little details that make it extra fun (the door that opens, the flowers by the door, and the sun and cloud in the sky). I already sent it to a friend who had invited me to her home, but you could also use a card like this for a Welcome to the Neighborhood and Moving card.

This would make a fun birthday card for someone who loves their ice cream with sprinkles on top. But the “You’re Sweet” sentiment would also make this card work for a thank-you.

And I sent this one to Mom and Pop. It’s always a good time to tell someone you love them. If you aren’t sure what card(s) to make this WCMD, why not do a love note for someone(s) special in your life?

Easy Burlap Gift Wrap & CKU Details (at the hop!)

Welcome! Whether you hopped this way from Michelle Hill's blog as a part of the CKU (Creating Keepsakes University) blog hop that's going on today or you just happened by, I'm happy you're here.

Let's talk burlap wrap!

Wanting to share my love of burlap with you, I'm giving you a sneak peek at something special I'm working on for my CKU class students. Shhhhh... don't let the cat out of the burlap bag. ;)

(I'm teaching at our special CKU reunion event next month. Woot! But more on that in a minute.)

Let's paint some burlap.

Supplies you'll need:

Burlap bag(s) (or canvas, or paper, or any style you fancy)

Note: My bags are from Jamali Garden, a fab floral shop in NYC. If you're reading this from NYC and wouldn't mind picking me up some more, please let me know. I promise to make it worth your while. :)

Acrylic paint

Note: I used the new and lovely Martha Stewart line of paints in Summer Haze blue and Wedding Cake white. I purchased these at Michaels. Check out my girl, Marth, talking up her paints.

A tag or scrap of cardstock
Paint brush or sponge
Foam stamps and/or number stencils

Note: I used the Monogram Serif Stencil set from MSC.
The foam stamps are a former Creating Keepsakes kit. I'm afraid it's no longer available, BUT you will get to play with these stamps if you take my Got Your Number class at CKU. (Again, more on that soon.)

Ready, Freddy? It's as easy as either stenciling or stamping a number on a bag with your paint.

Note: Because this is a special treat for my CKU class, which has a number theme, I used numbers, but you can do this with anything--a monogram, an ampersand sign (&), a heart--anything!

Before you paint, make sure you insert a heavy scrap (i.e. tag, cardstock, or cardboard) into the bag to keep the paint from bleeding through. Muy importante.

I stenciled the No. and stamped the 2.

The burlap took the paint beautifully. Well... except for the glitter paint. It didn't show up as well. But I do like the subtle, almost water-mark look it creates. Do you see the 3?

Oilcloth Projects: Part 1

Oilcloth! It’s hip, it’s durable, it’s fun to work with, and it’s loaded with nostalgia! What’s not to love about this versatile fabric?

What is Oilcloth?
If you aren't familiar, oilcloth is a laminated fabric that's been fused to a durable vinyl backing. Cotton laminate has a similar smooth finish, but it's lighter weight and a little less durable than oilcloth. Vinyl is another fabric option with a similar consistency. You can find these fabrics online and at some fabric shops.

What's it Used For?
With it's smooth finish, oilcloth is great for outdoor decor, tablecloths, lunch bags...anything that runs the risk of getting wet or messy.

I used both oilcloth and cotton laminate to create today! Most of my supplies were purchased at Material Girls Quilts in South Jordan, UT.

It totally reminds me of my grandma, as she used to have oilcloth tablecloths on her kitchen table. Believe it or not, this was the affordable option for her low-income family, at only $0.05-$0.15 a yard. Now adays, oilcloth averages about $15-$20 a yard. It’s worth every penny, if you ask me. Just look at all you can do with this sassy crafting supply!

Create a Cloth Banner

I’m super excited at how this one turned out. You see, the black pieces of the banner are actually made from chalkboard vinyl, which has similar durable properties to oilcloth. I purchased this fantastic fabric at Bolt, an amazing fabric shop in Portland, OR. I love it, because it allows me to personalize my banner over and over again for different ocassions. Since I’m sharing this on Studio 5 this morning at 11:00 MT, I thought I’d dress it up accordingly using a bistro marker (chalkboard marker).

Make your own banner in 4 easy steps:

Cut fabric pieces to desired size.
Sew two pieces of fabric back to back to create a double-sided banner.
Cut out around banner pieces with pinking shears or a decorative blade.
Punch holes in top of each banner piece and thread onto twine.

Banner Supplies

Oilcloth and/or cotton laminate
Chalkboard vinyl
Sewing machine
Pinking shears
Hole punch
Twine
Bistro marker or chalk

Try a Table Runner

Inspired by my sweet grandma’s tablecloths of yesteryear, I decided to create a modern take on an oilcloth table covering. To make this runner, simply measuer and cut the fabric to the length of your table, only covering a portion of the table’s width. Dress up the edges by sewing on some jumbo poms. Simple and cute!

Supplies

Oilcloth or cotton laminate
Jumbo pom pom trim
Sewing machine

Cover a Tray

Transform a basic tray into a durable serving/storage piece by inserting a piece of oilcloth or laminate in the bottom. You can either glue it in place with a sturdy fabric glue (such as Fabritac by Beacon’s) or hot glue. Or, for a more finished look, try sealing the edges with book binding tape, as I’ve done here.

Supplies

Oilcloth or cotton laminate
Tray
Book binding tape (mine is from Paper Source)

Cut Coasters

Oilcloth is water resistant, making it an excellent coaster option. Simply cut squares from fabric, and sew two squares back to back. Note: I used two different fabrics, making my coasters double-sided. Hey, you can also skip the sewing and use a single square for a slightly thinner coaster option.

Supplies

Oilcloth or cotton laminate
Sewing machine

Add Oilcloth Details

Finish your party decor with oilcloth-wrapped bottles. It’s as easy as cutting your cloth to fit a bottle or vase (I used coke bottles that I’ve been saving for such a fun project), and secure it in place with fabric glue or hot glue. Wrap an oilcloth bow around in a different pattern to finish your design.

Supplies

Oilcloth or cotton laminate
Recycled bottles or vases
Fabric glue (I used Fabric-tac by Beacon’s)

Play with Posies

In place of traditional flowers, try oilcloth creations. I made pinwheels following these instructions and cut a butterfly using my Slice Fabrique tool. For the stems, I simply punched the top of spoon strawes, and tied the buttons on my shapes through the holes. I added some glue to keep things extra secure.

Supplies

Oilcloth or cotton laminate
Buttons and twine
Hole punch
Spoon strawes (snowcone straws)

Seasons Change

Look closely, and you can see a worm in Mama Robin's mouth.

Today marks the first day of summer. And, like clockwork, the last of our baby robins left the nest... almost like they knew spring was over and it was time to move on.

We first noticed these four feathered babies when our small pup, Jack, became obsessed with a small pine tree in our backyard. He circled it and watched it like he was on the hunt. That’s when Cor spotted the nest.

At the base of this little tree was the only place Jack could be found since our friends hatched. We had to watch him closely to make sure he didn't harm the babes.

We kept the pups locked inside more during our bird time, but that didn't keep them from bird watching through the window.

On it, rested a plump mama, with her mate always nearby. Then we got our first look at the babes at feeding time. They were so little. This was only two weeks ago.

Here, mama is tending to her very young birds. Such a neat photo to capture!

How much these little guys grow in such a short amount of time. Just yesterday, these four babes sat squished together in their small dish home.

1, 2, 3, 4... This is when we discovered that four babes called this little nest home.

Then it was down to three in the nest, with the first adventuresome guy resting in a nearby tree after his first flight.

It wasn't long before the nest was down to three peeps.

Number 4 decided to take flight. Here, he rests in a nearby tree, waiting for his next go.

And by this morning, only two babes remained.

This was the last time I saw the babes in their nest. Down to 2.

By the time I got home from work, the nest looked like this. Not a babe in sight. Just in time for the first day of summer.

It sounds silly, but I was sad when I came home to an empty nest. But I'm glad the babes are finding their way in the world.

Part of me was sad to see our little empty nest, but I was also happy to know that they babies grew and were doing well.

The last of our little friends now rests on the fence out back. Practicing flying from one part of the fence to the next. Every so often, mama stops by with some food and motherly advice.

The last of the four birdies spent this evening flying from one fence board to the next, getting used to her new wings.

Soon this last babe will be on her way and our baby-bird saga will be over. The seasons are changing. Life is progressing. And I know it may sound cheesy, but I loved this opportunity I had to watch some of that change with our springtime house guests. I wonder what the next season will hold around here...

Fast Father's Day Gift with Heart

Finding that perfect gift for Pop can be tricky. What do you get the guy who has everything? You can’t go wrong with a gift card, but some feel they lack that heartfelt touch... until now. Here’s an idea that combines the ease of gift cards with the heartfelt touch of a handmade gift.

It’s an envelope mini album!

Attach several small envelopes (you can even use the envelopes that come with the gift cards) together using scrapbook adhesive. Decorate the envelopes, and fill each individual pocket with a gift card to one of Pop’s favorite shops.

This is a Valentine’s Day gift I made for Cor this year. He actually carries it with him, so you’ll have to excuse it’s worn exterior.

I filled the first envelope with a special love note to my sweet, but you can just as easily fill it with some special words for dear old dad.

This project can double as your greeting card. Simply fill the inside of envelope #1 with a special sentiment.

I wrote a little poem for each of the remaining panels. The words are clues to the gift card contained within that envelope.

Cor love coffee beverages, so his first card was to Starbucks--an affordable option.
The sentiment reads: "To show you that I love you a lot, let's start the fun with something hot!"

Another cost-effective choice, I included a card to Cor's favorite fast food restaurant, In n Out. Yum!
The sentiment reads: "The way to a man's heart is the tum, and this surprise I know you'll find num."

Who doesn't love iTunes? Cor used his to purchase apps, but this is also a nice choice for the music-lover dad.
The sentiment reads: "To the cutest tech geek I've ever known, here's something to use with your iPhone."

Include a gift card for something you can do with your dad. I went with a movie card for Cor, as we love seeing flicks.
The sentiment reads: "I love time spent with you, Romeo; let's take a night to enjoy the show."

If it's in your budget, include a bigger ticket item in your last envelope. Cor loves shoes more than I do, so I knew Foot Locker was an ideal choice for him.
The sentiment reads: "Last but not least, one more special treat; a card just for those beautiful feet."

Get the Kids in on the Fun!

Here’s an idea! Do you have more than one child. Have each child decorate an envelope, and then hook them all together. That would make this extra personal and special.

This project can come together in minutes, and it will make for a fun shopping spree for the man who means so much to you. Was it Intuition?

Confession: I absolutely believe in intuition. Do you?

Call it what you will. A voice. A feeling. Energy. A dream that feels like so much more than just a dream... Intuition is a way of feeling or sensing things. A way of connecting with yourself, others, and even a higher power.

I think all of us are intuitive. Some just know how to tap into it better. I’m fortunate enough to have some VERY intuitive people in my life, and I love it! I, on the other hand, am still learning to understand my own intuition and how to hear it/know it.

What’s the point of this, you ask? Well, I had a strange encounter with my own intuition today. To the outside observer, it won’t amount to much. But it brought me some great, much needed joy. So, to me, it amounts to everything. Interested?

Here’s the story:

About a Year Ago: I visit Gardner Village and see this incredible set of printed canvases for sale. They’re pink. There’s a scrabble one. There’s a typewriter one. There’s even one with a bitty white dog on it. So many things that I adore! They scream “Megan.” Alas, the set is almost $200. This does not scream “Megan.” I leave, not to think about them again, until...

6 Months Later: I visit the same store. The set is still there. I discuss my love for it with the clerk. She informs me it’s the last one. She also informs me it’s still $200! Dang. I want it, but I leave. I just can’t spend that kind of monies on an unnecessary item.

This Week: If you read my “C Word” post, you know I’m stressed. I’m tired. And I don’t feel too hot. More on this in a moment.

* This Morning: I come out of sleep thinking about those prints. Pictures I haven’t thought of since my last store visit. Not only am I thinking about them, I’m very sure that I’m going to buy them today. I have no plans to go to Gardner Village today. And I certainly didn’t find $200 of spare change in my couch. But I know they will be mine. As I become more alert, the thought leaves me.

This Afternoon: I’m in Target with a friend on our lunch break. We’re walking down the picture aisle. I ask her about another picture we both want. Another pic neither of us can justify spending the $ on. Neither she nor I have purchased it yet, either. “Oh well,” I tell her, “if we wait long enough it will end up here anyway.” As I gesture to the pics in the aisle, I notice it. Them. The pink, “Megan”-screaming pics! They ended up in Target! Now, they’re not on the same large canvas ones, but the prints are identical. And I love them just as much. I almost squeal with delight. Me, the sick, sad girl, is now so, SO happy!

Later this Afternoon: I buy the art! And I love the art! And, guess what! My friend buys similar art. And she loves hers just as much.

Here I am, just after my moment of Target bliss. I was so excited that I asked Joannie to snap a picture of me with the art.

Sure, you can call this coincidence, but why would I wake up and not only thinking about these pics, but knowing they’d be mine today if it weren’t for intuition?

The funny thing about my personal experiences with intuition is that they’re so often random. I don’t know why this happened today. It’s not like a vision of the winning lottery numbers hit me or something. This is often how my intuition works, which makes it hard for me to understand or recognize.

And the same kinds of things happen to my sweet mama. I hope she won’t mind me sharing that with you. Her scenarios are often as random and seemingly ordinary as mine. But it’s intuition. And intuition is so not ordinary.

What about you? Have you had intuitive experiences? I always love hearing about them if you’re open to discussing them. If not, I completely understand. This is a personal thing, and it can be a sensitive subject. If you are up for a little chitchat, I’d also love to know how you recognize your own intuitive abilities. Care to share?

Handmade Bibs from Oilcloth and Laminated Cotton

Is it rib night yet? Because, boy do I have the bib for you! Make that three bibs. Bibs I made using laminated cotton and oilcloth. I’m super excited about this particular project, because it’s my first sewing project made from a pattern. Everything I’ve sewn up to this point, I’ve sort of made up. This time, however, I had a fun design to follow.

My cute new friend, Kirsten, who works at Material Girls Quilts in South Jordan, UT, designed this pattern. I saw it and immediately thought of another friend of mine, who was about to have a baby. Of course, that was months ago. Her beautiful babe is six months old now, but I suppose they still wear bibs at that age. Heck, I still wear a bib. ;)

Anyhoo, here’s the bib I made for little miss Claire. I hope she likes it.

I had so much fun making it, that I decided to make a couple of others. Maybe I’ll use them on my own sweets someday. Or, if not, it’s always good to have a few handmade gifts on hand.

Which one do you like the best? I prefer Claire’s, but most people have said they like the black and white one.

Want to make your own bib? Here’s how:

Step 1: Fold your laminated (or oilcloth) fabric in half and trace fabric on back of one half.

Step 2: Cut out shape.

Step 3: Repeat with cotton fabric, which will be used as back of bib.

Step 4: Pin cut pieces together around edges and sew together using a zigzag stitch.

Step 5: Tear cotton fabric into strips, pin those strips around bib (like hem tape), and sew hem to bib using a straight stitch.

Note: Make sure you stitch an elastic to the top of the bib. This will act as your closure.

Step 6: Create a medallion flower, adding a large button to the center. This is what your closure will wrap around to keep the bib on. Note: For instructions on creating a medallion flower, click here.

Had lots of fun making my first pattern project. Who knows, maybe I’ll get up the courage to try it again sometime soon.

The Dreaded C Word...

...Change!

I had a fun, crafty blog post ready to share today, but it’s going to have to wait. I have something on my mind that I could really use your help with.

Change.

Change is hard. Change is also inevitable. Things never stay the same. They’re in a constant state of motion. Ebb and flow. Evolution. Shift.

I have and always have had a hard time with change. Especially big change. I like comfort. Things I know. People I know. Skills I know. The life I know. Don’t get me wrong. I love spontaneity. I love meeting new people. Learning new skills. Taking on new challenges. But I like these things happening while the foundation stays the same.

Change. scares. me.

I know. It happens everyday. I see friends, family, and coworkers making major changes in their lives all the time. But, even if it’s THEIR change, if it impacts me in the slightest way, I feel it. I worry. I think about it. A LOT. And I often get sad, especially if their change involves them not being a regular fixture in my life anymore for whatever reason (move, new job, etc.).

Today, however, I felt a big push for change in a particular area of my life. I didn’t see it coming. And I don’t want to see it now. But it’s here. It’s tapping on my shoulder, telling me...

...something needs to change.

I don’t know what that looks like, exactly. I don’t know if it’s a change in thinking or if it’s bigger than that. Honestly, I’m probably lying to myself (and to you) by saying that. I think I really know that it IS bigger, but I don’t want it to be. I want to be comfortable. I want to be confident. For me, confidence comes from doing what I know. Being who I know. Change takes all of that and turns it on its head.

My question for you--how do you know when it’s time to make a change?

Do you just feel it in your gut as I did today? If so, do you acknowledge that feeling, or do you shove it back down? If you acknowledge, how do you go about doing that? Do you act on it right away? If you shove it back, do you find it ultimately shows itself anyway, or do you move on and still feel fulfilled, never to hear from it again?

I’m torn. I want to shove. I want to ignore. Who knows, maybe it won’t even be an issue when the sun comes up. What if I act prematurely and find myself regretting the decision?

I’m sick. I’ve been sick for over a week with the cold that won’t die. This has to alter my perspective.

I’m on a new medicine, which is also messing with me.

Speaking of medicine, I’m currently without my narcolepsy medicine, which always makes a BIG impact.

I’m stressed. I’ve been away from the office for two full weeks. That makes for a lot of catch-up.

In other words, I’m probably not of sound mind. And I probably wasn’t when this desire for change hit me. SO, I’m left. Pondering...

At last, the project that consumed my life for a while is here. Well worth the work and the wait!

I was given the opportunity to write this Creating Keepsakes special issue, based on my former magazine column of the same name! And I’m so, so excited to finally be sharing this news with you. (It was a difficult secret to keep.) *doing happy jig*

This special issue is about a creative topic near and dear to my heart--organization. In it, I take you on an impressive tour of craft rooms around the globe. A total of 45 scrapbookers you know and love have invited us into their homes for a look at how they set up their creative surroundings. This includes a stop at my home, so I thought I’d share a peek of some of what you'll see inside my room.

These boxes contain my stamp sets and stamping supplies. I have the sets divided by type (wood and clear) and theme (background, alpha, sentiments, holidays, natural elements, etc.).

Charity Boutique this Weekend

My Portland Playground

Today I had the pleasure of spending my afternoon and evening on the streets of Portland, OR. I didn’t have a plan in place, so I typed “fabric shopping, Portland, OR” in Google. One of my search results caught my eye--Bolt Neighborhood Fabric Boutique. “Neighborhood,” “boutique,” AND “fabric” in one name? This store had to be good. So I hopped the hotel shuttle and headed the way of 2136 NE Alberta.

At the risk of sounding dramatic, I’ll say that my journey lead me to so much more than a neighborhood fabric boutique. It lead me to some much needed rejuvenation.

It was a plan-free day. I day with limitless possibilities. Just some time for me. No obligations. No deadline. No worries (beyond the usual). Just me time. What a blessing!

Here’s how my happy time was spent.

Stop #1: Bolt Neighborhood Fabric Boutique

Highlights: Opening the door and breathing in the pure fabric joy. Meeting store owner, Gina, and her kind helper. Buying fabric, oilcloth, bindings, burlap, thimbles, patterns, and even chalkboard fabric!

Stop #2: Close Knit

Highlights: Being inspired by the shopkeeper to take knitting lessons as soon as I get home. Buying puffy yarn made from baby alpacas. Watching my yarn be wound into balls. (The shopkeeper said it was like yarn on a ferris wheel.)

Stop #3: Tumbleweed Boutique

Highlights: Chatting with the gals running the store. Perusing the books in the shop. Buying a couple of those books. Discussing the joys of marriage and wonderful husbands with a fellow customer. Being inspired by display pieces (like the one above).

Stop #4: Collage

Highlights: Chatting with fellow scrapbookers who are in town for CKC. Buying new stamps, a paint marker, burlap butterflies, and delightful set of bitty box drawers (for possible use in a future issue of CK). Being inspired by a banner made up of some of my crafting favorites (burlap, baker's twine, and washi tape)--yum!

Stop #5: Frock

Highlights: The store owner unlocking the door and inviting me in, even though it was clearly after their business hours. The quirky, comical, and clever merchandise. Finding a fun new sweater that’s very Portland.

Stop #6: Screaming Sky Gallery

Highlights: The display of doughnut chotchkies that greeted me as soon as I stepped inside the door. The super sweet shopkeeper. A small gallery of art from local artists. The shelves of “blind boxes,” like the one below, which you open to discover what toy surprise is inside.

This sprinkled doughnut came from my blind box. I chose to switch him for this jelly-filled chocolate doughnut--a nice surprise offered by the shopkeeper.

Stop #7: Modern Domestic

Highlights: Seeing (and purchasing) adorable supplies from one of my favorite crafty ladies, Kata Golda. Taking time to enjoy the vintage store displays. Admiring the window display.

Stop #8: End of the Road, 900 NW Alberta

Highlights: The stunning church on the street corner. The Alberta market where I was able to wet my whistle. The bus bench outside the market that kept me dry until the cab arrived. The nice cabbie who picked me up.

Notice a pattern in all this? Yes, I probably spent a little too much $, but that’s not it. Nope, the pattern is the people. From the shuttle driver who dropped me off at the beginning of my journey to the cabbie who picked me up at the end and everyone in between--the people in Portland are incredibly cool and kind. Such a relaxed and big-hearted population of creative people occupy this crafty, boutique-lined streets.

What a great way to start my weekend. I simply can’t wait to meet more creative ladies and gents tomorrow and Saturday at the CKC scrapbooking convention. Hope I’ll see you there.

Vintage Ribbon and Fabric Storage, and a Fabric Giveaway!

One of my favorite columns to write at work is “Stash It.” Or, as we like to call it around the office, Must Stash It...get it? Mustache It? LOL Good times!

Anyway, this column appears in every Scrapbooking Tips & Tricks special issue, and it’s all about scrapbook organization. The current issue, Scrapbooking Tips & Tricks: Texture, was extra fun to write, because it’s about organizing your textured treats (ribbon, fabric, floss, etc.). These are some of my favorite scrapbooking supplies, both to use and to organize.

One of the ideas featured in my column was using vintage textile spools to organize your trims. I’ve picked these classic pieces up here and there at consignment and antique shops. They’re surprisingly easy to find. You can even search online at Esty.com and/or eBay.com and find several results.

Simply wrap the trim around the spool and use a small straight pin to hold it in place. Once the spool is full, put it on display to enjoy.

When it comes to how you approach your spool storage, you have options.

Wrap a bunch of various trims on one spool
Wrap your spools by trim type, keeping like types together
Wrap and divide the spools by trim color

The Twenties-Countdown Clock

Let the countdown begin. In one week I will officially be in my thirties. Eep! There are SO many things I thought I’d have done by age 30. And I’m proud to say that I’ve done many of those things. I’m married to the love of my life. I own a lovely (albeit dirty) home. I’ve established a career that I enjoy. I’ve traveled to many amazing places. I have a college degree... and the list goes on.

BUT...

Yes, there’s naturally a but. There are things I haven’t accomplished.

While I started working on my Masters degree at age 24, a full-time job, a wedding I had to plan (my own), and a severe case of mono all got in the way of me ever finishing it. I had the best intentions that I’d go back to school after I was married. Has that happened? Nope. Can’t help but feel like a failure in this area.

More importantly, I always thought I’d be a mama by age thirty. As you may know, it almost happened (by accident) earlier this year, but that ended sadly last May.

Now I’m left wondering if my priorities were out of whack. Instead of investing all of that time and energy into my career, a career I love, should I have put more into this goal. It’s one of those things. You know, the “there’s time for that someday” kinds of things. Well, someday is here and I’m left feeling incomplete. Inadequate. Unfulfilled.

Please don’t get me wrong. I KNOW I’M NOT OLD. I know there’s still time to be a mom. And I’m proud of where I am in life. I treasure my life with Cory. I think it’s really fun that I get to see my name published on a monthly basis. I get a kick out of the silly TV segments I do. I value my family and friends SO much. And I think I do an alright job dealing with the frustrations of having narcolepsy (somedays are better than others, of course).

So, why is it that I still feel like I’ve done something wrong? There’s only one of me, after all. I can’t be all things to all people. Heck, I can’t even be all things to all me. I’ve done what I can with the life that I have. And I’m happy with the life that I have. Is it because I put these pre-established expectations on myself YEARS ago, before I was even old enough to know what life really is that these thoughts haunt me now? Perhaps. I just wish I could get past the self-set timeline and admire who I am as an almost-thirty-year-old woman without those “but you should have also done...” in the background.

I know, this is a little on the deep side for my usually crafty blog. These are just the things bouncing around in my head as the clock continues to tick, and I thought sharing might help me sort them out. We’ll see if it works. In the meantime...

Tick tock. Tick tock. Someone please silence that twenties countdown clock!

Medallions and a Making Memories Giveaway! Mmmmm!

Now, here's how to make your own medallion base (the fluffy back part).

1. Cut a strip of flexible material (paper, fabric, crepe paper, burlap, felt, etc.) into a 1" x 12" strip.

2. Knot the end of a string several times, and run a basting strip along the bottom edge of the material.

3. Pull the fabric tight along the string to form the medallion shape.

4. With the medallion shape formed, stitch the two ends together and snip any excess thread. With that, you have your medallion base. Now it's just a matter of adding a delightful center.

A special card-making poem by my own dear mama!

I seriously have the cutest mom around. Not only is she my biggest fan, attending all of my local boutiques and classes (even when they’re repeats), but she’s also a talented poet. Last Valentine’s Day she sent me a handmade Valentine with this poem included. It’s the best poem I’ve ever read, and I've been waiting a year to share it with you. If this doesn’t get you in the mood to create love notes, I don’t know what will. Enjoy! :)

Dear Megan,

I’ve used my Stampin’ Write Markers,

And squeezed my squeezin’ punch.

I employed fussy cuttin’,

And used brads by the bunch.

I peeled and adhered 3D foam squares,

Pulled out “Click-n-Sticks” for a mile,

And sorted out perfect cardstock,

From a multi-colored pile.

I spared no painstaking effort,

Applying rub-ons and my stick of glue.

All of my supplies were “archival safe,”

And, of course, “acid free” too!

My stamps of hearts and flowers,

Adorned with colors, rare.

From clever, fold-up ink pads,

That I used with a great deal of care.

Pretty ribbons and lovely self-adhesives,

Took their special place,

So each had an eye-catching style,

Of flow, and flair, and grace.

I was extremely proud and happy,

When my Valentine production was through.

I’d used techniques learned from an expert,

At the classes I took from you!

DIY Felt Fortune Cookies

Hey there, cookie! Here’s a little Valentine’s Day good fortune for you. It’s a felt fortune cookie.

Inspired by the talented Kristine McKay's Studio 5 segment, I created these cookies for my coworkers last year. They come together quickly and make a great and unique surprise for anyone who brings a little good fortune to your life. Here’s the recipe for these cute cookies.

Step 1: Cut a felt scrap into an oval.

Step 2: Cut jewelry wire to the length of the center of your cookie.

Step 3: Apply fabric glue to the center of your felt piece.

Step 4: Position your wire to the glue and secure in place by adding a strip of ribbon across the top.

Step 5: Fold cookie in half and stitch around edge. Leave a small area unstitched so that you can insert a fortune.

Step 6: Use your finger to form the wire into the fortune-cookie shape.

Confucius Say: This is one project you’ll love this Valentine’s Day!

Lovely Wrapped Wreaths

Wrap a little wreath love using different trims. I'm sharing these projects on Studio 5 today, and they're are so much fun to put together. All you need are the following supplies:

* Wreath Form: (available at your local store) Note: Floral wreaths can sometimes be found at the dollar store.
* Rosette Trim: Search local fabric, trim, craft, or scrapbook stores for this trim. A few scrapbooking companies that sell this style of trim include: American Crafts, BoBunny, Maya Road, and Webster's Pages.
* Straight Pins
* Yarn
* Toppings: Ideas include: beaded trim, pom pom trim, and tulle.

Rosette Wreath

Inspired by this post on the amazing Maya Road blog, I started by making a few rosette-trim wreath (like the one above)s. Here’s how:

1. Pin your trim in place on the wreath. I used this stunning trim from Maya Road.

2. Wrap the rosette trim around the wreath base. Note: For a fluffier wreath, wrap the wreath with two layers of trim.

3. Once your wreath is wrapped, you can top it with a second trim (beaded trim, pom poms, tulle, etc.) and/or other accents (rosette flowers, hearts, etc.)

4. If you want to, you can also add a light misting of sparkle and/or color with spray ink. If you look closely you'll see pink ink has been applied to the creme rosettes.

Yarn Wreath

Lately, I’ve seen several yarn-wrapped wreaths in the creative world, like this cute example. Yarn-wrapped wreaths take more time to create than the rosette variety, but they sure look cute. The steps are similar.

1. Pin yarn in place.

2. Wrap yarn around base. Note: You may want to start with a thicker or fuzzy yarn, which is easier to wrap as you’re practicing.

3. Dress up your yarn wrapped wreath. For this project, I used the Valentine’s Day garland I made here.

These are happy projects to try for any holiday or season. Do you hang wreaths for seasons beyond Christmas? If so, I’d love to know what holidays or seasons you find yourself all wrapped up in wreath fun.

Valentine's Day Garland How-To

I love creating Valentine's Day projects, and this garland was no exception. It's quick, easy, and lovey-dovey cute. Give it a try! Here's how:

Supplies Needed

You'll need twine (I used the baker's variety), pom poms (bitty and a bit bigger), felt hearts, and a needle.

Step 1: Thread the first half of the heart.

Step 2: Add bitty pom to center of heart and thread needle through remainder of heart.

Step 3: Thread a bigger pom.

Step 4: Repeat steps 1-3 until garland is the length you want it.

Love will really be in the air when you string up this puffy string of sweetness. :)

Wait. Before you take down those lights and drink that last glass of eggnog, let’s talk Christmas for just a few more minutes. I know it’s mid January, but I have a couple of Christmas cuties to share with you from my holiday. Do you mind prolonging the holiday magic for a few minutes more?

A Themed Stocking

Has Jolly Old Saint Nick ever left you a themed Christmas stocking before? This year was a first for me, and I loved it. What a clever idea! My sweet Santa knows I have quite the sweet tooth and love pink, so he left me all (almost) pink treats in my sock.

Speaking of themed stockings, my mom sent her sister a stocking stuffed with gift cards to all of the stores she likes the most.

I love the idea of a themed stocking and definitely see myself doing one in the future. What theme ideas do you have?

A Charming Gift

This charm bracelet is one of my favorite gifts this year. Each of the little charms on it are from Fossil, and they’ve paid attention to every detail.

Marketing Magic

I don’t know if it’s because of my PR background or what, but I have a high appreciation for unique packaging. Fossil sent all of my charms in these little felt bags.

And my watch came in this cute tin.

But it’s the extra surprise they threw in that really made my marketer’s heart sing. It’s a wood ornament wrapped in baker’s twine, with a note to see their special holiday blog for project ideas using the deer. Wow! You bet I checked out their ideas, and I adore the deer. What a creative idea!

My Favorite Photo

Thanks to this beauty from Cor (the Canon 24-70mm/2.8 lens), I took many lovely photos this holiday...

...but the one below, which was taken before I opened my lens, happens to be my favorite. The boys are watching for a flying sleigh full of toys. Or maybe they’re checking out Frosty. Whatever it is they’re spying, I adore the look of the three of them gathered by the window. This picture will definitely find its way into my scrapbook soon.

Bitty Box Scrapbook Storage

It’s another new year, which means many of us are focusing our efforts on getting organized. As you already know, I’ve been spending a great deal of time getting my craft room in tiptop shape. While organizing my drawers, I came across this storage idea that I first shared in the “Tips & Tricks” column of Creating Keepsakes magazine in 2009.

I took little 2” x 2” boxes like this, which are from Expedx...

And added small accents to the lids of the boxes in various categories (eyelets, brads, bling, small tags, and flowers), which I set up by color...

Finally, I lined one of my shallow drawers with the boxes. They fit in the drawer perfectly!

The outcome: an affordable storage approach for those bitty scrapbooking delights. What is your favorite way to organize your small supplies? I’m always looking for new suggestions and ideas to try.

2010 in iPhone Photos

It's no secret that I like to snap pictures with my camera phone. In fact, this year alone I did a couple of Studio 5 segments on this topic and wrote about using camera phones in Creating Keepsakes magazine.

What's the deal with this obsession? Well, a phone is one thing we almost always have on us. If you're lucky enough to have a camera built into yours, and so many do anymore, this means you always have a camera at the ready. Perfect for those everyday shots!

Inspired by an idea Margie Romney-Aslett posted on Facebook, I decided to post a few of my 2010 phone-photo highlights. I have close to 1,000 images on my phone at the moment, so I really had to narrow. Here are a few. I love the glimpse it gives into my year. You bet I'll be keeping that camera busy in 2011.

Note: I'm breaking all the blog/online rules with this lengthy post. Please accept my apologies for all of the scrolling. If you want to opt out now, I'll completely understand.

JANUARY

Jan. 1: Cory and I try our hand at homemade marshmallows. Aren't they cute? They were tasty, too!

Jan. 7: Jewels and I catch a flick. I can't remember what we saw, but I know we enjoyed pausing to play with the jumbo chipmunks.

Jan. 12: I do my first of many Studio 5 segments for 2010. I was really stressed about what to wear, so I posted this pic for my personal team of fashion consultants. In other words, I posted it to Facebook. ;)

Jan 23: My cute coworker, Kim, and I join friends for a fun-filled day at Disneyland before the CHA craze begins. I can't go to D-land without stopping for some Dole Whip. It's delicious!

Jan 27: CHA (the Craft & Hobby Association trade show) is in full swing. Love the opportunity it provides me to see amazing new crafting products and beautiful friends. Speaking of friends, I adore these two gals, Jill (Jillibean Soup) and Stephanie (Bella Blvd.). We go way back to the new exhibitor days when they were patient enough to put up with my amateur film making skills. You can watch the outcome of those visits here and here.

Another sweet CHA friend. I don't think they get more passionate than Maggie. Check out her Cuttlebug Challenge blog for bunches of projects to make with your die-cuts.

Jan. 30: On my way home from Cali, I stop to enjoy a little Viva Las Vegas with these pretty people (my DH and parents). Here, we're waiting in line to go up in the Eiffel Tower at the Paris (where we stayed), something I had never done before. Very cool, BTW!

Part of my Vegas experience includes my first frozen hot chocolate at Serendipity. Super num!

FEBRUARY

Feb. 4: The stunning Lori and I fly to Portland, OR to teach at the first CKC event of 2010.

Of course, a trip to Portland meant a stop at the legendary Voodoo Donuts. Oh. My. Gosh. SO good! It was in a semi-ghetto part of town, but the risk to our lives was totally worth it. ;)

MARCH

March 14: I spot the March issue of Creating Keepsakes on newsstands. I happened to make the layout on the cover of this issue, which makes this moment even more exciting than it usually is for me. Naturally, I move it and its sister pub, Card Creations by Paper Crafts, to the front of the display.

March 15: I make one of my first posie bracelets, snap a picture, and send it to my friend for feedback.

March 17: Edward and I show up for work in our glorious green.

March 23: A HUGE day. Mom has her last cancer treatment. Our family goes out to dinner to celebrate.

APRIL

April 1: I show up for work extra early to pull a series of office pranks, including kidnapping this doll and holding it for ransom. This is the picture I sent to the doll's owner when asking for my payment.

April 8: I fly first class for the first (and probably only) time. Look at all of that legroom. My legs actually fit without squishing up against the seat in front of me. I was so thrilled by this that I grabbed my camera and obtained some photographic evidence.

April 10: Kelly and I take a break from teaching at CKC St. Louis to visit "the arches." Some 20 pictures later, we finally got a shot with both of us and the arch. (BTW, "the arches" is what cute Kelly called them. I still LOL every time I think of that. I later told the CKC St. Louis crowd to ask Kelly about "the arches" whenever they saw her. Yeah, she was thrilled. Hahahahahahaha! Good times!

April 25: Cory wins big on a penny slot in Wendover, NV. Way to go, baby. Dinner's on you!

April 30: At last, after nearly two years of growing, my hair is cut for Locks of Love.

MAY

May 8: Schmom, Pop, Cory, and I participate in the Race for the Cure. Mom's lookin' extra good in her pink survivor's shirt!

May 15: Cory and I take Cory's parents to see one of our favorite comedians, Brian Regan. If you haven't heard of him, I highly recommend you check him out here. He's heeeeelarious!

May 17: I make my way to NYC for the Nat'l Stationery Show. I couldn't go that far without making a trip to Tinsel Trading. It was just as incredible as Martha promised me it would be. ;)

May 23: I take a break from teaching at CKC Buffalo to visit Niagara Falls.

JUNE

June 14: My cousins visit from Denver. We go to a family-favorite destination--Lagoon. I rode these same boats when I was their ages.

June 27: Jewels and I visit the Utah Arts Festival, where we purchase darling handmade purses.

JULY

July 24: Cory and I take in a ballgame as part of our family's July 24 celebration (UT holiday).

July 29: Time for CHA Summer in Chicago, which means meeting up with more delightful friends, including these two sassy ladies, Kerri and Liz. Love these girls! Ummmm...yeah...Liz is standing on a stool in this shot. She's actually quite bitty, but she wanted to appear taller than me and the step stool did the trick. LOL

AUGUST

Aug. 21: After teaching at CKC Charlotte, Cory joins me for a little summer vacation, which included a stop in Denver, CO, where I bought this M-A-zing card catalog.

Aug. 27: I take a Creative Escape in Phoenix, AZ, where I get to play with paper and see a bunch of sweet friends, including Miss Maggie, who was teaching at the event.

SEPTEMBER

Sept. 5: Cor and I join Curt and Gina for some of the best pizza in Utah. If you're going to have The Pie pizza, Curt (my brother) insists you go to this location at the University of Utah. It's worth the drive.

Sept. 11: I visit the flag fields in Sandy, UT to remember those lost on Sept. 11. The many flags on display, each representing somebody lost, were both beautiful and sobering.

Sept. 25: I take many of my phone photos at the mall. This is one example. I was totally inspired by this Fossil display at Dillards. Wanting to remember the colors, the font, the patterns...basically everything about it, I took a pic.

OCTOBER

Oct. 8: The Creating Keepsakes team takes Joannie (associate editor) to Texas Roadhouse for her 40th birthday celebration. Yippee ki yi yay!

Oct. 25: Mom and I head to Denver, where I film a few scrapbooking/paper crafting videos for work. After a long day of filming, Mom and I crawl into bed with Aunt Ruby to watch the nightly news. Yeah, we're a wild bunch like that. Look out, D Town!

Oct. 29: The Creating Keepsakes editorial and events teams get together for a frightfully fun Halloween celebration. Our magazine team came as Cackling Keepsakes, a coven of crazy witches.

NOVEMBER

Nov. 5: Time for the holiday craft fairs to commence. I was selling my posie bracelets at my friend Holly's boutique. Here they are, all set up and ready to go home with happy shoppers.

Nov. 22: I puppysit for PK. This pic was to let mama know that Lex Pup was doing just fine. Well, she was a little chilly, but we got along okay.

Nov. 28: Bobby comes home from Iraq. We (he, Jewels and I) spent the day crafting and went to a movie that night. After the cinema, we went for this, the best yogurt in town. I'm sure I'll never hear the end of the fact that I thought it would be regular yogurt and not frozen. This also happened to be the day of a major snow storm here in UT. Why on earth would I knowingly go for FROZEN yogurt when it was a blizzard outside? Oh well. My puffy coat kept me warm and this tasty treat was totally worth the chill.

DECEMBER

Dec. 4: Another favorite phone use: creating a shopping list. If I see something I want, I snap a photo and send it to Cory. It's a good way for both of us to remember wishes.

Dec. 14: The Creating Keepsakes team takes a break from writing and editing to enjoy a holiday breakfast and Secret Santa gift exchange. Isn't my present pretty? I couldn't resist the photo op.

Whew! What a year it's been. Thanks for taking a look back with me. I hope this inspires (and didn't bore or frighten) you to take more everyday photos with your camera phone.

To make one or not? This is the question every year when it comes to New Year’s resolutions. Last year, I didn’t make a resolution, therefore I didn’t break a resolution. In 2009, I made my list of "realistic resolutions," and I’m pleased to say that I stuck to every one of them.

This year...hmmm...

I don’t know if it’s because I’ve spent far too much time watching “I Survived: To Death and Back” on the Biography channel this holiday break, or if it’s the fact that 2010 was a little on the harsh side, but I’m thinking my 2011 resolution needs to be love.

Love! What does this mean? I thought I'd explain with a few photos. Here goes:

Just because my house usually looks like this (messy):

And I currently look like this (super chub):

And I almost always feel like this (tired):

And my to-do list looks like this on a good day (long):

Does not mean that I’m going to forget about these guys (my pups):

Or spend less time with this handsome fella (my honey):

Or neglect these happy folks (my family):

Or put off the time I want to be spending with these crazy kids (friends):

In other words, I’m not going to let my hectic schedule, lack of narcolepsy medicine, and personal insecurities get in the way of what matters the most to me--those I love.

I’m going to stop dodging house guests because our home is a reck and smells like dog urine.

I’m going to spend more time with family between the usual big events.

I’m going to spend more time walking those pups who absolutely adore a little neighborhood stroll, even if there are things that need doing.

I’m not going to put off seeing an old friend because I feel too fat and embarrassed.

And I’m going to keep in better contact with my friends, even if that’s as simple as a little Facebook wall graffiti from time to time.

I’ve spent far too much time letting my insecurities about the way I look, the way I feel, the way my home looks, and the things I have to do get in the way of loving and being loved in return. If those “I Survived” shows have reminded me of anything, it’s that life is short and the only thing that matters when all is said and done is the love we’ve experienced.

I managed to accomplish my last two year’s worth of resolutions, let’s see if I can make it a charming third time in 2011.

Craft-room cleanup and a Follower Freebie!

I’m determined to start the new year off on an organized note...at least where my craft room is concerned. I’ve spent the majority of my holiday break cleaning and sorting, sorting and cleaning. I’m tired (what else is old?). The pic above (taken today) may not look like it, but I’ve actually made much progress. For one, I can actually see my desk, my daybed, and even my floor. That’s progress, baby.

Here are just some of the supplies I’ve sorted out to give away. Whew! No wonder I’m tired.

The Problem

I’ve decided the problem is I’m a hoarder. I hang on to stuff for waaaaay too long. For example, I have Stampin’ Up! stamp sets from 1999! I was in high school in 1999. I have paper and supplies from companies that, sadly, aren't even in business anymore (Luxe Designs, Scenic Route, Imagination Project, Rusty Pickle, and many, many more). I have beautiful Making Memories ribbon cards that I purchased when I was a teenager, just discovering the magic of Michaels. In other words, I have a lot!

It’s time for a change. As much as I LOVE my supplies, I just don’t have room for all of them anymore. My craft room is small, and I’ve decided that I need to keep only what I can contain.

The Favorites! (some of them, at least)

Of course, there are those favorite lines that I’ll never bring myself to get rid of (what’s left of them), no matter how old they may get. We (scrapbookers) all have these. For me, some of these oldies-but-goodies include:

Mellow by BasicGrey: As soon as I saw the cute little people, pups, and tress in this collection, I was hooked!

Girl Friday by Cosmo Cricket: I've always adored rotary phones (you can read more about that obsession here), and this line is one of the first I remember offering that cool motif (as well as many others). Also, the colors are so bright and happy!

Little Pieces stamp set by Stampin' Up!: Funny story about this set. I actually came up with the idea for it's counterpart, Big Pieces, when I was working at Stampin' Up!. It was a happy accident that I'll have to tell you about sometime. In the meantime, don't you just love these versatile, bitty images?

Craft Fair by American Crafts: This line came out right after I got my sewing machine. I loved (and continue to love) all of the sewing sassiness found in this collection.

Scrumptious by Sassafras (back when “lass” was still in their name): This is one of the first lines I remember seeing with an owl in it. And it was pink to boot! What's not to love?

This little Chuck Brown tree is a big blessing!

I hate to admit this, but I started this season not wanting to celebrate Christmas. My heart just wasn’t in it. You see, we were supposed to have a Christmas baby this year, and since that didn’t happen it kind of left a sad spot over the entire holiday for me. I’m relieved to say that I eventually shook some of these sad feelings, thanks to the help of my loving family and friends. But, because of my delay in getting into the Christmas spirit, we were without our decorations. Our solution: a bitty tree.

We call this cutie our Chuck Brown tree, because it reminds us of Charlie Brown’s little tree.

It’s so small, in fact, that we put it on our coffee table and it still doesn’t reach our ceiling.

But it’s perfect. And it’s real. I haven’t had a real tree since I moved out of my parents’ home. I love the smell of a fresh tree. Our fake tree just doesn’t compare.

So, we put our little tree up, got out a handful of ornaments and couple of strands of lights, and we set to decorating (with the help of the pups, of course).

The result: the perfect little Christmas symbol. Our decor didn’t extend much beyond our little tree this year, but it was enough. It brought some much needed Christmas spirit into our home when it was needed the most. O tannenbaum, o tannenbaum, you fill my heart with music!

Faux Photo Booth Fun!

Unless Santa can work a miracle, there’s no way our Christmas cards will be out in time. Because of this, I thought I’d share our silly photo shoot here as an interim holiday greeting.

I knew I wanted to do a photo-booth approach to the family photo this year, but it presented two problems:

Where can we find a photo booth these days?
If we do find one, how will we sneak the dogs in?

I’m thrilled to say that, thanks to the help of friends on Facebook, I found several photo-booth locations in Utah. If you’re interested, I’m told you can find them here:

South Towne Mall (in the food court, by the carousel)
The Kmart in Bountiful (sadly, they’re no longer in the other UT Kmart locations)

We found the booths, but we just weren’t sure how we were going to sneak the pups in, so we decided to set up a faux photo booth in our home. To do this, we hung a blue sheet from our plant shelf, and we pleated the sheet to give it a more authentic feel. We then set two kitchen stools in front of the curtain to make it feel more booth-y.

Wanting a more festive booth, I cheesed it up with garland and twinkle lights. I simply clipped them to the sheet with clothespins.

With the booth backdrop set up, it was then time to test the camera. I grabbed a cute model, set my camera to remote shooting, and tweaked the position of the camera until it captured the booth.

I don't know why, but this photo had Cory and me laughing to the point of tears. It's just that odd. It reminds me of the "American Gothic" painting with a Santa twist. LOL

Now, it’s time for props. We wanted our photo strip to spell out a greeting, so we selected props that would work to communicate our note. And, of course, costumes were in order. Some of our props included the following:

And costumes (Santa hats, doggie scarves and sweaters, and New Years hats)

With everything set, it was time to let the photo fun begin. Of course, this meant many, many outtakes. Here are just a few of those for your viewing pleasure. :)

Now which way did Cory go? Can't we all just sit still long enough to take a good picture. (If you have high-strung, energetic dogs, you know what wishful thinking this is.)

Uh oh, is that our booth backdrop falling down around us? Yeah, I think it's time to call it a night.

Believe it or not, between the many outtakes we actually got a few photos that worked. I put those images into a free digi photo booth template that you can download here (complete with instructions for using it).

You might think us crazy, but we had SO much fun with this little evening project. A faux photo booth would be a happy thing to set up in your home this holiday. Hang a sheet, grab a stool, set up your camera, throw in a few props, and watch your family fun begin. I have a feeling you’ll LOVE the outcome, whether or not you add them to a photo booth strip or simply add them to your scrapbook.
